Graduate Programs

Our Graduates

Program graduates have gone on to jobs with major corporations, research organizations, and educational institutions. Our graduates can be found in leading companies including Eli Lilly and Company, Amgen, First USA, Wyeth-Ayerst, Raytheon E-Systems, Texas Instruments, Valeant, and Abbott Laboratories. Others have been recruited by major research organizations, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Mayo Clinic, Battelle Memorial Institute, Baylor Health Care Center, and SAS Institute. Graduates who choose academic careers have been successful in academic appointments across the state and nation. Companies and institutions that employ our graduates continue to return to the Department to recruit additional graduates.

The Program Degrees

Baylor's Department of Statistical Science administers three graduate programs. These programs, the Master of Science (M.S.) Professional Master of Science (M.S.), and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), provide a balance between statistical theory and applications of statistical methods. Traditionally, graduate programs in statistics and biostatistics have focused on seminars and colloquia, consulting experience in statistical analysis, and research. Baylor's program includes these features, but also stresses communication skills and collaboration to prepare students for success in team environments in which graduates are increasingly expected to work.

Prerequisites for Degrees

We encourage applications from students with undergraduate degrees in business, computer science, mathematics, natural sciences, statistics or one of the behavioral or social sciences. Applicants are admitted to either the Ph.D. program or the M.S. program and should have a foundation in calculus and statistics. This foundation should include multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and at least one statistics course. Community college courses are acceptable.

The GRE is optional for admission to the graduate portion of the 4+1 B.S./M.S., and for admission to the Professional M.S.  For admission to the M.S. and admission to the Ph.D., the GRE is required.  The Graduate School has established minimum admission standards of 3.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale.  Ph.D. applicants will be considered for an assistantship and a tuition waiver.  These awards are made on a competitive basis.
